Weekly Update – 5/4/2018

In this weeks newsletter, we are talking about prevention and how we can intervene and make a change before lives are negatively affected.

This past winter we sent a team to Southeast Asia to visit our partners at Remember Nhu. Friend and Photo Journalist, Jared Whitney, followed along and beautifully documented life inside and outside the walls of our facilities.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse into the community we’ve built with your support!

The Importance of Prevention

In countries around the world today it has become culturally acceptable for families to sell their children when ends don’t meet. Child sex slavery has sadly become a massive industry in which 1.2 million children are being sold globally each year. Due to the high death rate in the sex trade (3 years or less), there is an increasing demand for more and more child workers.

Remember Nhu is a movement of people who dream of a better world. We believe that children have an inalienable right to grow up happy and healthy, and the idea that any child should be victimized in this way is appalling to all of us. Consider the following question: If you had the opportunity to identify a child who is at risk of being sold, prevent that from happening, and protect the child from ever entering the sex trade—would you do it?

That is exactly why Remember Nhu exists. We are a non-profit committed to ending child sex slavery through prevention. We identify those children who are at risk of being sold and provide them with a home in which their physical, educational, emotional and spiritual needs are met. By creating a supportive environment for each of these children, we are ensuring a childhood free from sex slavery and also dramatically lowering their risk of joining the sex trade later in life.

This movement is fueled by people like you who are willing to generously donate. And thanks to people like you, we currently have 85 homes in 15 countries, where over 1,600 children are currently protected from being sold. To date, and including past graduates, we have prevented over 1,800 children from sex slavery.

“Leo”

Leo has been the trusted shuttle driver for Remember Nhu in SE Asia for over 10 years. He is fun, loud, and the life of the party. Leo was a Buddhist all of his life until 6 years ago when a series of accidents, illnesses, and other hardships drew him to the love of Jesus that was constantly on display through the people of Remember Nhu. Now, his interactions with kids are that of a “fun uncle” who is constantly laughing, playing, and finding ways to point kids to Jesus. Every evening, at dinner time, he leads the kids in reciting Bible verses and prayers. “I love my God” he will often say in broken English. He is grateful for the opportunity to love the kids of Remember Nhu and to host and drive visitors and volunteers on a weekly basis.

“Farra”

Farra, 19, came to Remember Nhu 6 years ago with her siblings. For years she grew up in the safety and love of the community of Remember Nhu. Now an adult, she works alongside the home’s house parents to assist young girls as they live, go to school, work on their hobbies, and grow up in community. Farra is currently attending college online for accounting.

This year, we are sending 700 children to school in Thailand, Myanmar, and Uganda. The cost of each child’s books and basic school supplies in these countries is $20. You may fund one child or multiple children up to the number you desire. Thank you for joining us in giving these children a brighter future as we together protect them from the horrors of the child sex trade. To donate click the link below.
