Beautiful Gate

In the past decade, Zambia is grappling with the worst socio-economic problems ever experienced by the nation. On the one hand, this can be attributed to corruption and mismanagement but a severe draught and the HIV/Aids pandemic have inflicted further assault onto the Zambian people. To contribute towards a better future, Beautiful Gate Zambia community school for HIV/Aids orphans and other vulnerable children was established in 2004 by Bill and Thelma Kaping'a.

Emthonjeni

Emthonjeni is situated about 30 km South of Johannesburg in the Orange Farm informal settlements. This area is one of three that the South African government prioritized due to them being the poorest in Gauteng. Our focus area has an estimated population of about 30,000 people. The challenges people face in these areas are:

  1. Due to lack of proper housing facilities the people live in shacks. (An average of 4 people living in less than 24 Square Meters or 80 Square Feet)
  2. High unemployment, poverty and child headed households
  3. 2/3 of the homes do not have electricity.  None have running water.
  4. Estimated over 11,000 people infected with HIV/AIDS in the targeted settlements
  5. Refuse collection is limited leading to challenging sanitary conditions and outbreaks of parasitic infestations & Gastro Enteritis.
